(Linear) Network Coding refers to the mode of transmission of any network node where in slot t, any linear combination of a set {Pk}k ≥ 1 of available packets can be formed. Specifically, we have: where ak[t]∈Fq F, for each k constitute the global coding coefficients.

Network coded packets, arriving from different forwarding nodes, have a high probability of finding a path which allows delivery of sufficient information to recover the application data. Thus, CONCERTO achieves a high probability of delivery while efficiently using channel capacity.

Analog network coding is also referred to as physical-layer network coding, which first appeared in [24]. The design proposed in [24], however, does not support a practical implementation. It assumes symbol-level synchronization, carrier-frequency synchronization, and carrier-phase synchronization, which are unlikely in realistic settings.

Network Coding (NC) (Chapter 9 for more details) is a new concept that breaks with the end-to-end communication paradigm and allows for distributed coding within the network. Network Coding requires computing within the network, as coding does not only happen at the end nodes.
